Goto City, with its spectacular views of islands in the sea, historical and cultural heritage such as the Japanese Tang Dynasty envoys and churches, and many other attractions, was recognized as a Japan Heritage Site in 2015 as “The Border Islands: Iki, Tsushima and Goto – A Bridge from Ancient Times,” a World Cultural Heritage Site in 2018 as “Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region,” and in 2021 as the “Goto Archipelago In 2021, it was recognized as a Japan Geopark as “Goto Islands. (Shimogoto. Area) Geopark”. The “Clouds over Goto Nizo Yamamoto Art Museum” is a popular attraction for visitors to experience the world of Goto City native Nizo Yamamoto, who served as art director for Studio Ghibli films such as “Princess Mononoke” and “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time”.

This is the museum of Nizo Yamamoto, a native of Gotō City who served as art director for numerous anime masterpieces, including “Laputa: Castle in the Sky,” “Grave of the Fireflies,” “Princess Mononoke,” and “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.” In the renovated Shoen Residence, a samurai residence built in the Edo period (1603-1868), the museum exhibits background paintings of anime by Nizo Yamamoto and landscape paintings of Gotō.
